Apple Store Mumbai: Exploring BKC, India’s Most Modern Business District
Welcome to Mumbai.
When most visitors arrive in India’s financial capital, they head straight for the famous landmarks, crowded markets, and historic districts. But on this trip, I wanted to explore a completely different side of the city. My destination was BKC Mumbai, short for Bandra Kurla Complex, widely regarded as the most expensive commercial district in Mumbai and arguably one of the most prestigious business districts in India. This Bandra Kurla Complex Mumbai tour would take me through some of the city’s most important modern developments, including The Capital, One BKC, and finally the flagship Apple Store Mumbai BKC located inside Jio World Drive.
As an architect, I was interested in more than just the buildings themselves. I wanted to understand what makes this area so successful and whether it truly represents the future of modern urban development in India.
What Is Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)?
Bandra Kurla Complex Mumbai, commonly known as BKC, is Mumbai’s premier commercial district.
Home to multinational corporations, financial institutions, luxury developments, and some of the most valuable real estate in the country, BKC has become the center of modern business activity in Mumbai.
Unlike many travel videos that focus on poverty or overcrowding, I wanted to explore the opposite side of India—the ambitious, modern, and rapidly developing side that many visitors never see.
One of the first things I noticed was the infrastructure. New metro construction was underway, roads were wide and organized, and the district felt completely different from many other parts of the city.
For anyone planning a BKC Mumbai tour, this is where you’ll find some of India’s most impressive contemporary architecture.
The Capital: One of India’s Most Sustainable Office Buildings
My first stop was The Capital, a landmark office building known for its sustainability credentials and distinctive architecture.
The most striking feature is the giant egg-shaped structure integrated into the building facade.
At first, I assumed the egg was simply an architectural gimmick designed to make the building stand out. However, after seeing it in person, it became clear that it actually serves a purpose.
The structure contains conference and meeting facilities, with balconies wrapping around the curved form. Seeing it up close completely changed my opinion.
The building is also designed around sustainability principles.
According to the information available, The Capital achieves significantly improved energy performance compared to conventional office buildings. It also promotes healthier indoor environments through advanced air filtration systems and efficient building services.
As someone who designs office buildings professionally, I found the sustainability strategies particularly interesting.
Architecture, Glass and Shading
One thing that stood out immediately was the extensive use of glass.
Natural daylight is essential in office environments. Employees generally perform better and feel more comfortable when they have access to daylight and external views.
However, excessive glass can create significant heat gain, especially in hot climates like Mumbai.
The Capital attempts to solve this through external shading devices, fins, and carefully designed facade elements that help reduce solar heat gain while still allowing daylight into the building.
From an architectural perspective, it’s a balancing act between transparency, energy efficiency, and aesthetics.
LEED Gold Sustainability Features
The Capital has achieved LEED Gold certification and incorporates several sustainability measures, including:
- Rainwater recycling systems
- Energy-efficient building services
- High-performance air filtration
- Daylight optimization
- Water-saving technologies
Although impressive, it’s worth noting that LEED Gold is not the highest certification available. LEED Platinum represents the highest sustainability standard.

The Captial Office Building
Understanding Healthy Buildings and Clean Air
One of the most interesting aspects of The Capital is its emphasis on indoor air quality.
Modern sustainable office buildings increasingly focus on creating healthier indoor environments through advanced filtration systems.
Many people don’t realize that clean air isn’t just about air conditioning. It depends heavily on the filtration systems installed within the building.
Higher-rated filters remove finer particles and contaminants, helping improve indoor air quality and occupant wellbeing.
This growing focus on healthy buildings is becoming a major trend in modern office design around the world.
One BKC: Mumbai’s Most Prestigious Office Address
My second stop was One BKC, one of the most prestigious office buildings in Mumbai.
Unlike The Capital, One BKC isn’t trying to impress visitors with dramatic architecture.
Instead, it focuses on efficiency, functionality, and premium office space.
The tenant list speaks for itself.

The Capital Building , Mumbai
Major international companies including global technology firms, financial institutions, and multinational corporations have offices here.
In many ways, One BKC demonstrates an important architectural lesson:
Sometimes efficiency is more valuable than architectural spectacle.

Engineering Marvel: The Giant Structural Columns
Although the building appears relatively simple at first glance, there is one feature that immediately stands out.
The enormous structural columns supporting the building.
The raised structure creates large open areas at ground level while supporting the massive office floors above.
From an engineering perspective, these columns are incredibly impressive.
Large transfer structures like these require sophisticated engineering and significant construction expertise.
While the facade may appear simple, the structural design is anything but.
Mumbai: A City of Density and Opportunity
Walking through BKC also gave me a different perspective on Mumbai itself.
Mumbai is one of the most densely populated cities on Earth, yet certain districts feel surprisingly spacious.
Areas like BKC demonstrate how thoughtful planning can create comfortable urban environments despite extreme population density.
Compared to some other Indian cities, Mumbai feels energetic, vibrant, and constantly evolving.
There is always something happening.
From ongoing metro construction to new commercial developments, the city feels like it’s continually reinventing itself.
Jio World Drive: Mumbai’s Most Luxurious Shopping Destination

Jio World Drive
The final destination on my journey was Jio World Drive, home to the flagship Apple India Store.
This isn’t an average shopping mall.
Jio World Drive has quickly established itself as one of Mumbai’s most luxurious retail destinations, featuring premium international brands, upscale dining, and world-class architecture.
The development feels closer to Singapore or Dubai than many other shopping centers across Asia.
Located in the heart of BKC India, it represents another example of Mumbai’s rapid modernization.

Apple Store Mumbai: Apple’s First Store in India
The highlight of the day was finally arriving at Apple Store Mumbai.
This is Apple’s first physical retail store in India, and it’s clear they didn’t cut corners.
Designed by Foster + Partners, the same architectural practice responsible for some of the world’s most famous modern buildings, the store combines simplicity, transparency, and extraordinary attention to detail.

Blending Modern Architecture With Indian Culture
One of the most interesting aspects of the design is how it incorporates Indian influences.
The ceiling features intricate timber patterns inspired by traditional Indian craftsmanship, while large ficus trees help blur the boundary between inside and outside.
The architecture creates a connection between Apple’s global design language and local culture.
This approach makes the store feel uniquely Indian rather than simply another Apple Store.

The Incredible Staircase Inside Apple Store Mumbai
For me, the most impressive feature wasn’t the technology.
It was the staircase.

Apple staircase with one complete glass
As an architect, I found myself studying the details rather than the products.
The staircase demonstrates an extraordinary level of craftsmanship.
Glass balustrades appear almost seamless.
Stainless steel fixings are carefully integrated into the structure.
Connections are hidden wherever possible.

Every gap, joint, and material transition has been meticulously considered.
The staircase feels less like a functional circulation element and more like a sculptural piece of furniture.
Curved Glass and Precision Engineering
The glass detailing is particularly impressive.
Large curved glass panels are expensive to manufacture and difficult to install.
Apple has gone even further by minimizing visible joints and creating an almost seamless appearance.
Looking closely, you can see the incredible precision involved in the silicone joints, glass connections, and stainless steel interfaces.
Most visitors probably never notice these details.
Architects certainly do.

Another fascinating detail is the store’s giant glass facade.
I was told that some of the glass panels were manufactured as single pieces, creating uninterrupted transparency around the building.
Transporting and installing glass of this scale is a major engineering challenge.
Yet the result is stunning.
The glass wraps around the store with almost no visual interruption, reinforcing Apple’s design philosophy of simplicity and openness.

Why Apple Store Mumbai Is More Than Just a Store
What makes Apple Store Mumbai BKC special isn’t simply the products.
It’s the architecture.
The building demonstrates how careful detailing, premium materials, and thoughtful design can elevate an everyday retail experience into something memorable.
Whether it’s the timber ceiling, the giant glass facade, the trees integrated into the design, or the remarkable staircase, every element has been carefully considered.
