For many visitors, staying here is a bucket-list experience. For me, as both a traveller and an architect, I wanted to see what made this building so special.

The History Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
The story begins with Indian industrialist Jamsetji Tata.
Construction started in 1898 and the hotel officially opened in 1903.
At the time, Mumbai was growing rapidly as an international port city, but it lacked a truly world-class luxury hotel. Tata wanted to create one of the finest hotels anywhere in the world.
To achieve this, he employed Indian architects while also bringing in British architects to oversee portions of the project. The result was a building unlike anything India had seen before.
More than a century later, visitors still come from around the world to experience the history preserved Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
The Architecture Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
One of the most fascinating aspects Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is its architecture.
Unlike many famous hotels that follow a single design style, the Taj combines several influences.

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel has various architectureal styles
European Influences
The grand staircases, proportions, and formal public spaces are heavily influenced by European and Edwardian architecture.
Walking through the corridors feels similar to walking through some of the great hotels of London or Paris.

Beautiful facade details with mixed styles
Islamic Influences
The most recognizable feature of the building is the famous onion dome.
This architectural element draws inspiration from Islamic architecture and gives the hotel its instantly recognizable skyline.
Portuguese Influences
The balconies, decorative details, and certain façade treatments show strong Portuguese influence.
These details help create the unique architectural identity of the hotel.

Why Architects Love the Taj Mahal Palace
As an architect, what impressed me most wasn’t any single feature.
It was how all these influences work together.
Many buildings that mix styles end up looking confused.
The Taj Mahal Palace somehow manages to feel coherent despite combining several architectural traditions.
That’s not easy to achieve.
The Hidden Original Entrance
One thing many visitors never realize is that the current entrance wasn’t the original entrance.
Most guests arrive from the Gateway of India side and assume that’s how the hotel has always functioned.
In reality, the original entrance was located at the rear of the building.
The hotel was designed around a large U-shaped plan and guests originally entered through a landscaped courtyard.
Today, parts of that area have changed through renovations and later developments, but you can still understand the original design concept when exploring Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

The Courtyard Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
The courtyard is one of the most beautiful spaces in the hotel.
Originally this area was a landscaped garden filled with trees and fountains.
The swimming pool was only introduced much later during renovations in the 1960s.
Today the courtyard acts as the heart of the Heritage Wing.
Surrounded by arches, balconies, black stone facades, and intricate details, it creates a peaceful retreat away from the busy streets of Mumbai.
Looking upward, you can even spot later additions to the building.
The uppermost floor was added decades after the original construction and remains slightly different in proportion from the historic levels below.

Why the Hotel Faces the Sea
One thing that puzzled me initially was the building’s orientation.
Why wasn’t the courtyard facing the ocean?
The answer is simple.
The layout maximizes the number of rooms with sea views.
By orientating the hotel this way, more guests can enjoy views across Mumbai Harbour and the Gateway of India.
More than a century later, those sea-view rooms remain some of the most desirable accommodations Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.

The Grand Staircase Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
One of my favourite features Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was the grand staircase.
The cast iron detailing reflects engineering traditions from the late nineteenth century.
The decorative railings, elegant supports, and beautiful proportions create a sense of grandeur rarely found in modern hotels.
The staircase also benefits from natural daylight streaming through large windows and arches, creating dramatic shadows throughout the day.
As someone who loves architecture, I spent far longer here than most guests probably do.
It’s one of those spaces that makes you stop and appreciate the craftsmanship.

This long list of notable guests has helped establish The Taj Mahal Palace Mumbai as one of the world’s great hotels.

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Mumbai Restaurants
One thing many visitors don’t realize is that the hotel itself is a destination for dining.
Even if you’re not staying overnight, several restaurants attract guests from across Mumbai.

Sea Lounge
The Sea Lounge is one of the hotel’s most famous dining spaces.
This is where I had breakfast during my stay.
The service was exceptional and the views across the harbour create a memorable experience.
Harbour Bar
The Harbour Bar holds a unique place in Mumbai history.
It was Mumbai’s first licensed bar and remains one of the city’s most iconic drinking establishments.
Rooftop Dining
The Taj Tower also contains rooftop dining spaces with impressive views across the Gateway of India and Mumbai Harbour.
Mumbai’s First Licensed Bar
The Harbour Bar deserves special mention.
As Mumbai’s first licensed bar, it has become an important part of the city’s hospitality history.
For more than a century, guests have gathered here to enjoy drinks while overlooking one of India’s most famous landmarks.
It’s another reason why spending time Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel feels like stepping into history.

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Mumbai Attack
No discussion of the hotel would be complete without acknowledging the events of 2008.
During the Mumbai terrorist attacks, the hotel became one of the primary targets.
The attacks caused significant damage and resulted in tragic loss of life.
Despite this, the hotel reopened and continues to stand as a symbol of resilience and recovery.

The 2008 Memorial Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
One of the most moving spaces Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is the memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives during the attacks.
A peaceful waterfall installation symbolizes remembrance, calmness, healing, and eternal life.
Standing there serves as a reminder that this building represents much more than luxury.
It also represents strength, resilience, and remembrance.
Heritage Wing vs Taj Tower
Many visitors don’t realize the property consists of two separate hotels.
Heritage Wing
The original Taj Mahal Palace.
This is where I stayed.
It focuses on architecture, history, and atmosphere.
Taj Tower
The modern extension.
It offers larger rooms and contemporary facilities but lacks some of the character found in the historic building.
For first-time visitors, I would strongly recommend the Heritage Wing.
Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Mumbai Room Tour
I stayed in the Heritage Wing and was fortunate enough to have a room overlooking the courtyard and pool.
The Heritage Corridors
One thing I loved was simply walking to my room.
The corridors themselves are part of the experience.
Natural light filters through arches and skylights, creating beautiful patterns throughout the day.

Courtyard Views
My room overlooked the central courtyard and pool.
This gave me a unique perspective of the architecture below.

Marble Finishes
The marble throughout the hotel is exceptional.
It immediately communicates quality and permanence.

Lighting Details
One detail I particularly liked was the subtle lighting beneath the bed and throughout the room.
It’s a small touch but helps create a premium atmosphere.

What I Liked About My Room

Facilites in room
The room wasn’t the biggest I’ve stayed in.
It wasn’t the most modern either.
But it had something more valuable: character.
You could feel the history surrounding you.
That’s something many modern luxury hotels simply cannot replicate.

My Thoughts After Staying Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
After spending several days in Mumbai, I can honestly say that staying Inside Taj Mahal Palace Hotel was one of the highlights of my trip.
What surprised me most wasn’t the luxury.
It wasn’t even the history.
It was the character.
Many luxury hotels around the world feel interchangeable.
You could wake up in a five-star hotel in London, Dubai, Singapore, or Sydney and struggle to tell the difference.
The Taj Mahal Palace is different.
Every staircase, corridor, courtyard, and archway feels connected to Mumbai itself.
The building tells a story.
As an architect, I appreciated how the hotel hasn’t tried to hide its evolution.
You can still see where floors were added and spaces adapted over time.
Those imperfections actually make the building more interesting.

After staying in luxury hotels across several countries, I’ve come to believe that the world’s best hotels aren’t necessarily the most expensive.
