Most Expensive Home: Inside Antilia and Mumbai’s Billionaires Row
Exploring Antilia, Lodha Altamount and the Richest Street in India
Mumbai is the richest city in India and one of the wealthiest cities in the world including the most expensive home.
Ranked among the world’s leading financial centres, Mumbai is home to some of the most expensive real estate on the planet. Hidden within South Mumbai near Marine Drive, lies one of the city’s most exclusive addresses: Altamount Road Mumbai, often referred to as Billionaires Row Mumbai.
This prestigious street is home to India’s wealthiest families, luxury residences, and perhaps the most famous private residence in the world: Antilia.
On this trip, I set out to explore Mumbai’s most exclusive neighbourhood, visit the world’s most talked-about private residence, and find out what makes this area one of the most expensive pieces of real estate anywhere on Earth.

Starting at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel
My journey began at the famous Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in South Mumbai.
Overlooking the iconic waterfront near the Gateway of India, the hotel is one of Mumbai’s most recognizable landmarks. The combination of colonial architecture, luxury hospitality, and waterfront views makes it one of India’s most prestigious hotels.
While the Gateway of India was unfortunately covered in scaffolding during my visit, the area still provides a fascinating glimpse into Mumbai’s history and wealth.
From here, I would leave the historic district behind and head towards the city’s richest neighbourhood.
What is Billionaires Row Mumbai?
Most people know it simply as Billionaires Row.
Its official name is Altamount Road, a prestigious residential street located in South Mumbai.
The area is famous for housing India’s wealthiest families, business leaders, and industrialists.
Unlike many wealthy neighbourhoods around the world, Altamount Road contains something extremely unusual: private residences built on a skyscraper scale.
Most cities reserve towers for offices, hotels, or apartment buildings.
Mumbai’s Billionaires Row takes things to another level.
Here, entire skyscrapers can belong to a single family.
Driving Through South Mumbai
As I travelled north through South Mumbai, one thing immediately became clear.
The city is surprisingly green.
Large trees line many of the streets, creating an environment that feels very different from the crowded image many people associate with Mumbai.
Along the way, my driver pointed out several luxury neighbourhoods and explained how the city continues to grow through major infrastructure projects, including new tunnels and transport links connecting different parts of Mumbai.
The contrast between old colonial architecture, modern skyscrapers, and dense urban development creates a unique character that few cities can match.

Driving to Billionaires Row
Malabar Hill: Looking Down on Marine Drive
Before reaching Altamount Road, I stopped at Malabar Hill.
This elevated area provides one of the best viewpoints in Mumbai.
From here, you can look down across the famous Marine Drive, the iconic C-shaped bay often referred to as the “Queen’s Necklace.”
The sweeping curve of the coastline is lined with historic Art Deco buildings and remains one of Mumbai’s most famous urban landscapes.
Looking out across Back Bay, it is easy to understand why this part of Mumbai has become some of the most valuable real estate in India.
Hidden among the trees behind the skyline are some of the country’s most expensive homes.
Antilia: The Most Expensive Home in the World?
The main reason for visiting Billionaires Row was to see Antilia.
Owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, Antilia is widely regarded as one of the most expensive private residences ever constructed.
The reported construction cost is often estimated at around $2 billion. Now thats why its called the most expensive home.
To put that into perspective, many landmark skyscrapers around the world cost less than this single residence.
Antilia isn’t simply a luxury house.
It is effectively a private skyscraper.
The building contains:
- Multiple helicopter pads
- A private cinema
- Ballroom facilities
- Extensive parking floors
- Luxury entertainment spaces
- Private staff facilities
- High-security infrastructure
It represents a level of residential luxury that is difficult to comprehend.
Security Around Antilia
One thing visitors quickly notice is the security.
As I approached Antilia, there were police officers, security personnel, checkpoints, and surveillance throughout the area.
The property has reportedly faced security concerns over the years, which explains the heavy presence.
Filming around the building can be challenging, and many visitors choose to view it from a moving vehicle rather than spending too much time standing nearby.
Despite the restrictions, I managed to get several good views of the building from different angles.
An Architect’s View of Antilia
Seeing Antilia in person was fascinating.
The first thing that stood out was the scale.
Photographs don’t really capture how enormous the building is.
Standing nearby, you begin to appreciate the engineering involved.
The massive cantilevers project far beyond the structural supports below.
Large portions of the building appear to float above the lower levels.
From a structural engineering perspective, it is extremely impressive.

Looking up at Antilia
The Architecture of Antilia, most expensive home.
At the same time, I found the architectural language difficult to understand.
Every floor looks different.
Different materials appear throughout the facade.
Columns shift position.
Large overhanging volumes extend in multiple directions.
The result is certainly unique, but I’m not convinced it is particularly elegant.
Rather than feeling cohesive, the building feels like several different designs stacked on top of one another.
From some angles it appears almost chaotic.
That’s what surprised me most.
Considering the reputation of the architects involved, I expected something more visually consistent.
Instead, Antilia feels more like a collection of architectural ideas assembled into one giant structure.

Lodha Altamount: Luxury Apartments for India’s Elite
Directly beside Antilia sits another famous building: Lodha Altamount.

Lodha Altamount to the right
While Antilia belongs to a single family, Lodha Altamount serves a different purpose.
This ultra-luxury residential tower contains exclusive apartments designed for India’s wealthiest residents.
The tower has become one of the most prestigious residential addresses in Mumbai.
Unlike Antilia, which is entirely private, Lodha Altamount allows multiple ultra-high-net-worth individuals to live within one of the city’s most exclusive developments.
The building is known for luxury amenities, premium finishes, extensive security, and spectacular views across South Mumbai.

Why Mumbai’s Billionaires Row Is Unique
What makes Billionaires Row so fascinating is that it combines private wealth with vertical architecture.
In many cities, wealthy individuals buy mansions.
In Mumbai, some of the richest residents build skyscrapers.
The scarcity of land, extreme property values, and dense urban environment have created a unique form of luxury real estate.
Instead of spreading outward, wealth rises vertically.
The result is one of the most unusual luxury residential districts in the world.

Mumbai: A City of Contrasts
One of the things I enjoy most about Mumbai is its contrast.
Within a short distance, you can move from colonial landmarks and historic districts to modern luxury towers and billionaire residences.
The city combines history, wealth, density, culture, and ambition in a way that few places can.
Whether you’re interested in architecture, luxury real estate, urban development, or simply seeing how the world’s wealthiest people live, Mumbai offers a fascinating experience.

Final Thoughts on The Most Expensive Home and Altamount Road
Visiting Altamount Road Mumbai gave me a completely different perspective on the city.
While Antilia may not be my favourite building aesthetically, there is no denying its significance.
As one of the most expensive homes ever built, it has become a global symbol of wealth, ambition, and engineering achievement.
Combined with nearby developments such as Lodha Altamount, the area represents some of the most valuable and exclusive real estate in India.
If you’re interested in luxury architecture, billionaire lifestyles, or modern urban development, Billionaires Row Mumbai is one of the most fascinating streets in the world.
