Almost Died Zanzibar Jumping: Sunset Thrills at Forodhani Gardens

Zanzibar is known for its picturesque sunsets, vibrant culture, and rich history. But one of the most heart-pounding experiences you can have here is a local tradition called Zanzibar jumping. Every evening at Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town, locals and tourists gather to leap off the pier into the ocean as the sun dips below the horizon. I took part in this thrilling activity—and almost didn’t make it out unscathed.

Here’s how it all unfolded and why Zanzibar jumping comes with serious risks.

The Draw of Forodhani Gardens: Sunset and Excitement

Forodhani Gardens is a must-visit spot for anyone in Stone Town. It’s a place where locals meet to enjoy the sea breeze, savor Zanzibari street food, and catch the spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean. As I wandered through the gardens, the excitement of the crowd near the pier caught my attention. People were daringly jumping into the water, laughing and cheering each other on.

This was my introduction to Zanzibar jumping—a tradition that’s as much a part of local life as the spices and markets Zanzibar is famous for. But what I didn’t realize at first was that this seemingly fun and harmless activity could quickly turn dangerous.

The Risks of Zanzibar Jumping: Shallow Waters and Danger Below

Before I took the leap, I noticed a few people hesitating at the edge of the pier, looking down at the water below. It wasn’t until I was standing there myself that I understood why. The water can be deceptively shallow, and the rocks beneath the surface are not far from the feet of the jumpers. This has made Zanzibar jumping a risky thrill, and many people have been hurt doing it.

I found myself second-guessing my decision for a moment, but the crowd’s energy pushed me forward. I thought, “I’ve come all this way, I might as well do it.”

The Jump: A Close Call

As I launched myself into the air, the rush of adrenaline was undeniable. But the moment I hit the water, I realized something was wrong. I felt the hard impact of the shallow water and for a second, I panicked. I’d misjudged the depth and hit the ocean floor harder than I expected. It was a split second that felt much longer, and for a moment, I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it back up safely.

This was a close call—a reminder that Zanzibar jumping, though thrilling, is not without its dangers. As I surfaced and swam back to shore, I breathed a sigh of relief, but I couldn’t shake the thought of how different things could have turned out. Several people have been injured while jumping here, and in some cases, those injuries have been severe. My experience gave me a new perspective on the risk behind the fun.

Mizingani Seafront Hotel: A Safe Haven After the Jump

After that near-death experience, having a comfortable place to return to felt like a blessing. I stayed at the Mizingani Seafront Hotel, located right by the port and a short walk from Forodhani Gardens. This beautifully restored hotel offers a peaceful retreat from the busy streets of Stone Town. The colonial architecture, ocean views, and its proximity to the main attractions made it a perfect place to unwind after a day of adventure—and to recover from my scary moment in the water.

Should You Try Zanzibar Jumping? A Word of Caution

For anyone planning a trip to Zanzibar, visiting Forodhani Gardens is an absolute must. The lively atmosphere, delicious food, and stunning sunsets are reasons enough to make it a highlight of your trip. However, if you’re tempted to try Zanzibar jumping, I’d advise caution.

While it may look fun, the risk is real. The water can be shallow, and misjudging your jump could lead to injury—or worse. Many people, myself included, have underestimated the danger, and some have paid a steep price for it. If you’re not confident, it might be best to watch the jumpers from the sidelines and enjoy the sunset from a safe distance.

If you do decide to jump, take the time to check the water depth, and be mindful of the risks. Zanzibar jumping is an unforgettable experience, but it’s important to understand the dangers that come with it.

Would you take the leap? Let me know in the comments if you’d dare to try Zanzibar jumping, or if you’d prefer to stay dry and watch from the shore!
